19 Hamburg Sights Town Hall After the Town Hall of Hamburg burnt down completely in 1842, the council moved into temporary premises – for 55 years! The newTown Hall was inaugurated in 1897. It was erected on more than 4000 oak poles and has 647 rooms. The tower is 112 meters high with 436 steps. As complete contrast to the hanseatic style, the town hall shines with an elaborately decorated facade, which is adorned with statues of emperors. Above the main door, the idiom is inscribed in Latin: The descendants shall aim to maintain the freedom which was achieved by their ancestors with dignity. • www.hamburg.de/rathaus Lake Binnenalster The lake Binnenalster , located in the city centre, forms the fashionable core of Hamburg.
