29 Frankfurt am Main Sights Römer and Römerberg This beautiful patrician's house has served as the town hall of Frankfurt am Main since 1405 and is to this day the official seat of the city's lord mayor. Trade shows were held in both the town hall's spacious Römerhallen and on the Römerberg , the large marketplace in front of the Römer, as early as the Middle Ages. Today, the Römerberg represents the heart and soul of Frankfurt's historical old town, and is the city's most popular sight- seeing destination. The Römerhallen are still used to stage special events of every variety. • www.frankfurt.de Paulskirche and Emperor's Cathedral (Kaiserdom) Not far from the Römer is the St. Paul's Church, where the first German National Assembly was held in 1848. Since then, the church has been known as the cradle of German democracy. Consecrated in the name of St Bartholomew in 1239, this cathedral was officially chosen to serve as the electoral site for kings of the Holy Roman Empire in 1356. Ten imperial coronations took place here between 1562 and 1792. • www.frankfurt.de 1 2b 2a
