39 Munich Sights Marienplatz and Königsplatz The most famous central square in Munich, the Marienplatz , is located in the heart of Munich, surrounded by the new and old city hall, numerous shops, cafés and restaurants. It was built in 1158 and since then, it is visited by millions of people every year. In particular, the carillon in the tower of the new city hall plays on the hour every day and encourages millions of tourists to listen. The Königsplatz is a place at the top of the street, Briennerstraße , framed by three buildings of Ludwig I: The Doric (Propyläen), the Ionic (Glyptothek) and the Corinthian (State Museum of Classical Art). It is commissioned in order to create a symbol of the solidarity to Greece. The area around the Königsplatz is home to the Kunstareal , Munich's gallery and museum quarter. This place is also used for events such as an open-air-cinema in summer. • www.marienplatz.de The Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche) Located in the old town of Munich, the Frauenkirche is very visible in the cityscape. With its 99 meter high towers it even overtops the city council. Here, you have the panoramic view all over the city and to the Alps. For two hundred years it has been the Cathedral of the archbishop from Munich. The inside accommodates about 20,000 people.
