The names of the Pinakotheks allude to the time periods of the displayed works of art: With more than 800 master pieces by European painters the Old Pinako- thek, one of the oldest galleries in the world, houses one of the most famous collections of Old Master paintings. The collection reflects the eclectic tastes of the Wittelsbachs, Bavaria's ruling dynasty, over four centuries. The New Pinakothek exhibits 19 th century art and is especially famous for its comprehen- sive collection of Impressionist paintings from Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh and many others.
