48 Florence on the Elbe Through the wealth of its cultural and art treasures as well as its attractive situation at the Elbe river Dresden is one of the most beautiful cities of Europe. The city is located on the direct path between Moscow and Paris. Dresden is an industrial, governmental, and cultural center, world- wide known for the historic center and an unmatched collection of baroque architecture, such as the famous Semper Opera House or the Zwinger. The most beautiful buildings of the baroque old town were created during the regency of August the Strong (1694–1733). At the end of World War II Dresden was almost totally destroyed. Today it presents itself in its former glory after decades of recon- struction. The economic life of Dresden is improving: tourism, an innovative computer industry and consumer goods are important sectors.
