WELCOME ADDRESS
and doctor-assisted suicide.
The new edition of the American DSM diag-
nosis system, DSM-5, has revived the debate
about the usefulness and limitations of di-
agnostic systems in psychiatry. The former
WPA president M. Maj will talk about diag-
nosis systems in psychiatry in his lecture
and A. Frances will address “Ethical issues in
psychiatric diagnosis”.
The new interactive format of the member
forum deals with current developments in
health care politics and invites members
and other interested parties e.g. to discuss
the remuneration system in psychiatry and
psychosomatics and the amendment to the
professional training regulations. Forums on
health care politics address the disease man-
agement programme (DMP) for depression
and psychotherapy guidelines.
The central opening event will address the
specific situation of people with dementia.
Federal Minister for Health H. Gröhe will
give a welcome address to the congress
participants and the gerontologist A. Kruse
will speak on “Borders between vulnerability
and resources in people with dementia”.
J. Harris, known from the JAMA series “Art
and Images in Psychiatry”, will give a lec-
ture on “Vincent van Gogh – his art and his
illness”. The artistic framework will be pro-
vided by the Stage Fright Orchestra (Lamp-
enfieber Orchestra) “Les Amis de Clérivaux”.
As a special highlight, one of the most im-
portant works of “outsider art” awaits you
at the DGPPN congress: the murals by the
psychiatric patient Julius Klingebiel will be
brought to life for all congress participants
in a new walk-in photographic room instal-
lation.
We have again compiled an exciting young
doctors programme for students and foun-
dation doctors. We will support you step
by step on your professional path with sub-
ject-specific and career-related symposia,
lectures, discussion forums and workshops.
In 2014 we are again offering more than 80
workshops as part of the DGPPN Further
and Continuing Education Academy and
the congress programme again includes a
large number of interesting state-of-the-art
symposia. The DGPPN supports the recon-
ciliation of family and career: our congress
kindergarten has meanwhile become a tra-
dition.
The DGPPN congress 2014 will continue
the good cooperation with our Austrian and
Swiss colleagues in the ÖGPP and SGPP. In
addition, this year’s congress will be even
more accessible to colleagues from neigh-
bouring European countries. One focus this
year, under the direction of N. Sartorius,
are symposia with colleagues from Russia,
the Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic states,
among others, that will address topics such
as addiction and psychiatric care in political-
ly challenging conditions.
We will also address the wider public with
a series of specially designed events. Highly
topical subjects will be addressed. For exam-
ple, pupils, parents and teachers will learn
from M. Spitzer about some of the risks and
side effects of digital media for learning and
health. Another public event will be held un-
der the motto “Diagnosis ‘mentally ill’ – rec-
ognise signs and symptoms”.
We look forward to welcoming you to Berlin
and wish you an interesting and insightful
time at the congress and productive ex-
changes with colleagues.
On behalf of the Executive Committee of the
DGPPN and the Programme Committee
Your
Prof. Dr. med. Wolfgang Maier, Bonn

therapy and Psychosomatics (DGPPN)
