Border crossings between vulnerability and
resources in people with dementia: a professional, ethical
and sociopolitical discourse
Andreas Kruse, Heidelberg (Germany)
The medical rehabilitative and nursing-related care of people with dementia always has to
be understood by members of the care system and by dementia patients and their relatives
in the sense of “border crossings” between cognitive and physical vulnerability on the one
hand and cognitive, emotional, daily living-related and socio-communicative resources on
the other. The lecture will consider the care of people with dementia from both perspec-
tives. It will illustrate the extent to which the stimulation and maintenance for as long as
possible of existing resources (especially as regards emotions, socio-communication and
daily living) can contribute to the well-being and participation of people with dementia;
at the same time it will highlight special cognitive and physical vulnerabilities and analyse
their relevance for medical rehabilitative and nursing care. The two terms “shaping of the
self – shaping of the world” constitute the central context in which this discussion will be
embedded. These terms do not become less relevant when supervising people with demen-
tia, but actually more relevant. The lecture will also discuss questions related to human
dignity and innovative care structures and illustrate how important it is also to strengthen
medical rehabilitative, nursing-related and social care for the realisation of human dignity
