How will the rise in longevity affect cognitive
functioning?
James W. Vaupel, Rostock
Vorsitz:
Peter Falkai, München
Jörg M. Fegert, Ulm
A rapidly increasing proportion of people in Germany and other high-income countries are
surviving into their 90s. Concern is widespread that the basis for this development is the
survival of frail and disabled elderly people to higher ages. I will present recent evidence on
this, including evidence published in two articles by colleagues and me in the Lancet. I will
review what is known about the demography of longevity and then discuss what is known
about how the rise in longevity will affect cognitive functioning and, more generally, the
ability of people to live independently after age 80.

Otto F. Kernberg, White Plains (USA)
Vorsitz:
Sabine C. Herpertz, Heidelberg
Arno Deister, Itzehoe
This presentation will include a review of the BPD clinical syndrome, its differential dia-
gnostic assessment, and the present state of therapeutic indications and effectiveness. It
will also summarize etiological considerations and specific neurobiological characteristics
of these patients. The interaction between neurobiological disposition, psychosocial en-
vironmental influences and the development of characteristic interpsychic structures will
be explored. Unresolved long term limitations of the effectiveness in present treatments
will be discussed.
